Dr Mark Thomas
Infectious Diseases Physician, Auckland DHB, Auckland, NZ
Mark Thomas has worked, since 1988, at the University of Auckland as teacher and researcher into infectious diseases, and at the Auckland City Hospital as an infectious diseases physician. He has lived through the AIDS epidemic, now a very much less frequent condition due to the ready availability of excellent antiretroviral drugs, and the prolonged New Zealand group B meningococcal disease epidemic, and would like to help New Zealand improve its stewardship of antimicrobial agents, to slow the tsunami of antimicrobial resistance that is looming on the horizon. He has been trained how to don and doff the protective clothing required for the care of patients with Ebola or related infections, and is delighted that he has avoided the necessity to implement this training in the care of his patients.
